Bilbao, the capital of Spain’s Basque Country, has a deeply idiosyncratic culture. It is a part of Spain, yet completely unique. Unsurprisingly, this bleeds into their football as well. As a beacon for the Basque people, Athletic Bilbao have come to fly the region’s flag in Spain.
One of the most singular facets of the club is their ‘Basque-only’ player policy. It’s an aspect of the club that operates both in the realm of identity and economy with multifaceted repercussions in each.

Bilbao is not the capital of the Basque Country
This is how football cubs should be.
Bilbao, the capital of Spain's Basque Country? Can you quickly check this with a google search? According to people from Bilbao it is the center of the universe but this is a different story.
Who’s here after Nico Williams rejected Barcelona and signed a ten year deal with Athletic?
Lizarazu is Basque – you're wrong, he was born in St Jean de Luz in Iparralde (North Basque Country)
It might have kept the team from being as competitive, but we don't support Athletic for the trophies or the wins. We support it because it's the Basque national team. We never gave a fck about titles.
I remember finding out the hard way on Championship Manager 01/02 😂
people born in euskal herria and formed in their amateur period in one team of euskal herria
It would be great if every club has such a policy. Than in that kind of situations we could see who is the best! This way at almost all other clubs there are majority of players that had no connection with that club academy, city or country… They represent club because of money!
Congratulations from all at Glasgow Rangers tonight, good luck against man united
Bilbao is not the capital of the Basque Country. Way to start the video, though.
Chivas la neta deberia de hacer lo mismo… Olvidate de mexicanos, Chivas deberia de jugar con puro jugador de Jalisco.
IMO a football club should represent a community and yes the fact they remain at the top tier without virtually any foreign players is a testament to the footballing talent of their youth and the skill of their coaches and is a trophy in of itself that nobody can take away from them
Athletic Bilbao are one of three clubs that never relegated from La Liga beside Real Madrid and FC Barcelona,
that saying a lot.
English workers and British educated basque formed the club hence why it’s Athletic rather than Atletico, which is why their one foreign owner was English. They should keep it basque with the option of some English players playing for them. Our players need the experience abroad and there’s a cultural tie there. They are the Spanish side I support. In Italy, it’s Genoa and AC Milan who also have English roots.
Every club should be like this.
The only club that actually has not submitted itself to modern football, and still is able to thrive. When you support Athletic Club you support an ideology. Such a shame Real Sociedad decided to let this policy go.
Aupa Atleti from Finland, I hope I'll visit San Mames someday!
Importantly, under this challenging policy, Athletic is the 3th club with more titles in Spain (after Madrid and Barca) with 9 Leagues, 25 Cups and 3 Supercups. Today, is the current champion of the Cup, 4th in la Liga, and leader of the ELeague in its new format.
A key element for this is that Athletic is a family. Its crowd and support have demonstrated to be the best in Spain and one of the bests in the world.
Very proud of being part of it. Aupa Athletic
Am a supporter of this club. Holiday in the Basque Country and love its dedication to maintaining its identity.

Man I miss these Tifo videos. This was their golden era imo
You notice this what is missing from English academies.
Authentic Football club
The "Basque parentage" thing is just not true. Born and/or raised as youth players in the Greater Basque Country.

I’m from Basque descent. So this is cool to learn more about them. All I really know is that they’re tough mountainous people and there’s a lot of them in Nevada. Reno I think?
